2006 - Year in Review

Not expecting much, but…let’s take a magical mystery tour down memory lane (and figure out where I’ve gone wrong):

  • Started at IBM, all bright-eyed and bushy tailed. Almost 12 months on from that, the same bright eyes have dulled a little, some bags have grown underneath, and if it were up to me they’d be spitting a pair of fucking death beams. I discarded the tail in the hopes of something more practical, like a scorpion’s sting.
Having said that, it’s not all doom and gloom. Nothing like being gainfully employed, learning something new, and getting outta uni. Admittedly I felt I was just a young buck barely stirring up trouble in the Big Blue, but hey, we all gotta start somewhere. Not that I’ll be around long enough to find out.
  • Haven’t been working out as much as a result. Spending definitely more time in front of a screen than on the receiving end of a set of weights or before a basketball ring. Building up a bit of a modest stomach. No more tight whites for me =p
  • A little more social as a result. I used to suffer a bit of shyness bordering on anti-social but work has helped turn that shit around quick smart.
  • Read about The Game (as in the art of speed-seduction, not the rapper that has disowned himself from G-Unit). I actually found it quite amusing…even tried a couple of tricks from it.
  • Yes, I’m still single. What do you expect, I work in IT…;)
Yeah, yeah, no excuse. I’ll get around to it in my own sweet time (and when I’m completely pissed off my teats).
  • Been doing a bit of photography with the new camera, good times to be had with Augi
  • Had the house to myself for a bit…damn, that was good. Nothing like a bit of independence.

That’s about it. Wow. That was one really fucking uneventful year.

Oh yeah,

  • I turned 21. Not that it matters - it’s just a birthday. Right?

Right.

Refresh my memory if I’ve forgotten anything, but I say bring on the next year. This one was fairly uneventful (and my Mum wanted me to study Finance, for fuck’s sake). Here’s hoping the next one is just as uneventful.

And I get into my dream job. emoticon

House of Flying Daggers

Got around to finishing this one off.

It’s an old movie, but I have been meaning to see it for ages and I finally got around to watching it tonight. It wasn’t bad - it seems that during that period of time, making love had to be as violent and passionate as possible, with lots of open-mouth planting and not much kissing. In addition, men seemed to be unable to take a woman’s clothes off properly and barely succeeded in exposing a bit of shoulder (despite being the lust driven beasts back in those days).

I also fail to see what all the fuss is about in regards to Zhang Zi Yi. I’m sure she’d make an extremely good model or piece of furniture, but she’s not a very good actress. In fact, most of her acting consists of opening her eyes as wide as she can, displaying some acrobatics, or ultra-extended death scenes where she stumbles as if she’s acting in stilettos. And that’s another thing - no one dies straight away. Despite being hacked to bits, impaled with swords, and stabbed with daggers in the back and heart, the lead characters just keep plodding along. All well and good for sustaining the plot, but please…

But it’s not a bad film. In fact, it probably would appeal to the females more than it would to the males. It’s not Hero, if that’s what you were expecting, but there are some nifty fight scenes in there. Can’t beat kung-fu choreography.

Oh, and I got around to moving all the parts from rafel to its new skin, and gave it a brain transplant as well. I’ll have a go at updating this thing tomorrow. I’ve actually been taking it quite slow these past couple of days, and it’s fucking grrreat.

Finally, Happy 21st to Slay (the last one)…

xmas daze

Thanks to those who showed up today, much appreciated to have your company around..it made cleaning up downstairs all the more worthwhile.

Thanks to Schmung for the Peronis emoticon

Anyway, it’s been a long day and the beer has made me nice and sleepy..to those that couldn’t turn up today I hope to see you soon, either for Slay’s bday or for NYE2007.

*sigh*, tired..emoticon

New toys

I wanted to celebrate Xmas a little early, and also coupled with the fact that I was no longer satisfied with a pair of briefs for every Xmas, I decided to get myself a little present.

Well, two of them.

My motherboard is officially EOL and there are going to be no more Socket 939 processors from now on.

So what do I do instead instead of dropping AMD altogether? I snap up a bargain on Pluscorp and get myself a dual-core solution. I figure this will last me until them Core 2 Duo prices look reasonable enough for a complete overhaul.

The case was a bit of an impulse thing, but daaamn it’s fine. It better be fine for the price.

It will/should be more or less future proof - it’s got some adequate cooling solutions in there, plus room for water cooling. We’ll see how it all goes when I start filling it with bits.

Expect to see articles on these two (somewhat expensive emoticon) products in the near future.

On a somewhat completely unrelated note, downstairs has been cleaned up! It looks quite good, mainly thanks to Mum because I’ve been in the office all week, but in the last few days I’ve been helping to cart furniture around, and it looks a damn sight better. Could definitely be a shite side worse, that’s for sure.
*sigh*, one thing out of the way…

For the car lovers

It’s primarily cars in there, but some other cool stuff as well.

Awesome, awesome, awesome.

Random links

A double post for today:

Gamespot’s Best games of 2006 - A couple of surprises in the PC lineup, haven’t really paid attention to the others I’m afraid. Top dogs seem to be newer titles, though I’ll leave it to you to read it for yourself.

Games to look for in 2007 - Next years line-up looks to definitely make use of the new hardware coming out. Better start saving now if you want your hit of eye-candy…

Board games! - I heard that there was a board game place somewhere in Sydney? Probably from Kaiza. It reminds me of that place in Korea we went to…especially that game when one person had to touch a spot and the last person on the table to get their hands to it had to be beaten with a toy mallet. (I swear I’m not making this up. ;) )

Anatomy of Rafel

The article has kinda been in the pipeline for a while now, but I finally put some links and piccies in there.

Anyways, you can find it here: it’s a brief visual tour of my rig (I should probably put some benchmarks up even though I’m not much of a benchmark kinda guy). Yes, yes - other articles are coming soon. I should put up some game reviews as well. All will come during the Xmas / New Years holiday. I’ll try to try.

In other developments, apparently I’m going to be made into a Test Architect, which is like a higher tier in the whole testing scheme of things…basically more responsibility with the same rewards (and vague objectives…basically messing around with tests and defects, I figure. Best-job-description-EVER). I figure They would say that the job itself is its own reward. emoticon

Happy Festive Season, y’all. emoticon
