Bouncy Bouncy

Sorry, I really couldn’t help myself:

I reckon that the next Splinter Cell should be a rough, raw recruit. Because let’s face it - Sam Fischer is old, dude. He’s a war vet. I’m surprised that the wiring in that head of his isn’t already crossed thanks to that extra dose of Agent Orange (does anyone remember Mr. Becker from high school? The crazy maths teacher?).
So bring on the young blood who needs to run a trial by fire.

Tennis tonight was good, getting better…although I’m still loathe to run. ;)

Working through The Sopranos, and trying to limit myself to an episode a night.

And I’m still evaluating the headphones. Starting to like them more…all it needed was a touch of bass boost. Like I said, write up is coming.

I’m kind of undecided about the Senny HD201s. At first, they sounded a bit off, as if one thing was traded off for another. But now I give the EQ a slight bass boost, and now they sound half decent. The pleather is also hella hot, not to mention the whole closed thing. They don’t isolate as well as I thought, either.

I’ve still got about 18 days to go before I can return them and consider alternatives (DT231pros, Allesandro MS-1s or AD400s), but for now I gotta get some friggin’ sleep so I can make this 9am tomorrow…emoticon

Sennheiser HD201

These just came in the post today, and damn they’re spartan. Well, I guess I’m saving money.

Just putting them through their paces at the moment - so far they’re pretty much what I expected in terms of isolation and sound quality. Some tracks have got my head bobbing, though…

I’ll do a more detailed write-up later on tonight when I get back from my swim.

I’ve also got a review for Rainbow Six: Vegas in the works; I’ll put that up later when I’ve taken some screenies…and finish typing it up. ;)

Stuff to ponder on

Medusa was a Gorgon.

Modern electrical air conditioning was invented by Willis Haviland Carrier.

North Rocks Computer Markets is a bit of a rip-off when compared to alternatives. I think it’s there to trick elderly people into thinking they’ve got a good deal.

You can get mousepads with breasts. One of my mates from work has one for an anime chick…I thought it was just a jap thing. emoticon

Was flicking through Dan’s data for info on flashlights, and found this…you know you want one.

Consumerism

I never did understand the whole prospect of exactly why we need to consume. By "consume", I mean the need to purchase goods and services in order to enrich our lifestyles. I believe that every living organism needs to consume something in order to continue surviving (in our case, we do it so we can survive, but go that little extra bit further so we can make life as cushy as possible).

I was never sure why I needed goods to make my life happier than it already is (because my life is so very happy, and all). Then again, I probably wouldn’t be able to hack the alternative, being brought up in a fairly comfortable lifestyle. Maybe that’s it - people are inherantly competitive, and some may sense a need to surround themselves with unnecessary objects as some kind of status symbol. Then the following generations will be brought up in this particular lifestyle and accept it as the norm…

Children are also exceptionally good at wanting unnecessary things that they can’t have, and when parents refuse the request they throw tantrums and start kicking and screaming.

I was only wondering about this because I went to Top Ryde with Jo today, and I saw a few things that I thought I would like, but eventually decided against it. Thinking back, I remembered I felt this strong urge to just say "Fuck it, I’ll buy it". I was just curious as to why I decided to think like that.

Anyway, I’m giving Homeworld 2 another crack, and damn it’s hard. The first 2 or 3 missions were okay, but now I’m getting wasted…in the exact same spot as I stopped playing last time. emoticon

I’ll install Nerbacular Drop later on today and have a go at that.

Finally here’s an amusing link related to Duke Nukem Forever.

ground strokes

Oh, if you didn’t already know, Playstation 3 will be released March 23rd. You know…it’s my birthday around that time…emoticon

Tennis for the second day in a row, and yes, I still sweat like a Nevada preacher. But it was great fun, even though my tennis skills have gone to shit. I’ll probably be nice and sore for all of tomorrow as well…

In the Koss review I mentioned the JVC Marshmallows as a cheap in-ear alternative. The RRP is $29, which compared to other particular models is quite affordable. Of course, you get what you pay for and they are by no means perfect - it’s another bang for buck thing. I was reading about them on the Head-fi forums, and apparently the stock eartips are similar to cheap earplugs that you would find in a workshop. People claimed that it was like sticking a wine cork in their ear.

But then as I read on, I came across this post that detailed how to replace the stock eartips with Shure E2 foam tips ($25) to achieve a better fit and hence a cleaner sound. If you really wanted you could replace it with the silicone sleeves, I guess.

So $29 + $25 = $54. Compared to my preferred alternatives, it doesn’t seem all that expensive.

But then again, why the hell would I need a pair of canalphones for…? Probably when I get myself a PMP or when I’m on plane flights. Maybe someone could try it out and let me know how it goes. emoticon

Bangin’ for bucks

Koss KSC-75 review is up…

God was smiling when he made 4-day weekends from Thursday to Sunday. Fucking awesome. emoticon

I also got my bits and pieces from PC Case Gear today (sponsored by Jo and her gift voucher). So very, very expensive…the AU$12 postage doesn’t help either. At least it’s express post.

I put in a Nexus 120mm Real Silent fan and that’s pumping cool air from the aircon directly into the path of the heatsink fan. If I had another $48 lying around, I’d probably get me one of these as well. Also got some 4-pin to 3-pin adaptors so I can hook my fans up to the fan controller…and finally a 60mm to 80mm adaptor for the server heatsink, so there’s no more annoying 60mm fan whine in the room.

The reason I got an adaptor is because I thought that the CPU fan was emitting an annoying whine. It’s that noise that barely fringes on the limits of human hearing, like the whine you hear before your ears pop. So after I replaced it with an 80mm Nexus, I expected some results. Better, but not great.

After hovering my ear around the inside of the case like a crazy person, I finally figured out what was causing the noise in the server…it’s the hard disk. emoticon

When I unplug the 8 year old Seagate hard disk from the PSU, the whine is gone. All that’s left is the gentle whir of fans.

Do hard disks whine? Is it the platters wearing out or something?

Something to look into…maybe after tomorrow.
