I never did understand the whole prospect of exactly why we need to consume. By "consume", I mean the need to purchase goods and services in order to enrich our lifestyles. I believe that every living organism needs to consume something in order to continue surviving (in our case, we do it so we can survive, but go that little extra bit further so we can make life as cushy as possible).
I was never sure why I needed goods to make my life happier than it already is (because my life is so very happy, and all). Then again, I probably wouldn’t be able to hack the alternative, being brought up in a fairly comfortable lifestyle. Maybe that’s it - people are inherantly competitive, and some may sense a need to surround themselves with unnecessary objects as some kind of status symbol. Then the following generations will be brought up in this particular lifestyle and accept it as the norm…
Children are also exceptionally good at wanting unnecessary things that they can’t have, and when parents refuse the request they throw tantrums and start kicking and screaming.
I was only wondering about this because I went to Top Ryde with Jo today, and I saw a few things that I thought I would like, but eventually decided against it. Thinking back, I remembered I felt this strong urge to just say "Fuck it, I’ll buy it". I was just curious as to why I decided to think like that.
Anyway, I’m giving Homeworld 2 another crack, and damn it’s hard. The first 2 or 3 missions were okay, but now I’m getting wasted…in the exact same spot as I stopped playing last time.
I’ll install Nerbacular Drop later on today and have a go at that.
Finally here’s an amusing link related to Duke Nukem Forever.
