Bangin’ for bucks
Koss KSC-75 review is up…
God was smiling when he made 4-day weekends from Thursday to Sunday. Fucking awesome.
I also got my bits and pieces from PC Case Gear today (sponsored by Jo and her gift voucher). So very, very expensive…the AU$12 postage doesn’t help either. At least it’s express post.
I put in a Nexus 120mm Real Silent fan and that’s pumping cool air from the aircon directly into the path of the heatsink fan. If I had another $48 lying around, I’d probably get me one of these as well. Also got some 4-pin to 3-pin adaptors so I can hook my fans up to the fan controller…and finally a 60mm to 80mm adaptor for the server heatsink, so there’s no more annoying 60mm fan whine in the room.
The reason I got an adaptor is because I thought that the CPU fan was emitting an annoying whine. It’s that noise that barely fringes on the limits of human hearing, like the whine you hear before your ears pop. So after I replaced it with an 80mm Nexus, I expected some results. Better, but not great.
After hovering my ear around the inside of the case like a crazy person, I finally figured out what was causing the noise in the server…it’s the hard disk.
When I unplug the 8 year old Seagate hard disk from the PSU, the whine is gone. All that’s left is the gentle whir of fans.
Do hard disks whine? Is it the platters wearing out or something?
Something to look into…maybe after tomorrow.
